USING BILINGUAL DICTIONARIES IN READING CLASS

Bilingual Dictionaries
This research entitled “Using Bilingual Dictionaries in Reading Class” was aimed to investigate how an English teacher made lesson plans for reading class, the implementation of using bilingual dictionaries in the reading class, and the evaluation used by the teacher in the reading class. This research used case study design. The subjects were eight graders of SMPN 2 Cibadak Sukabumi. The data was collected using document, observation and interview.
The result described some facts that the teacher created the lesson plans for reading class by including using bilingual dictionaries’ phase. Bilingual dictionaries use was implemented in whilst-reading activity which consisted of understanding alphabetical sign; locating the difficult or unknown words or phrase; contextual guessing; choosing the right meaning for context; teaching synonym and antonym of words; pronouncing the words; discussing the text; and inferring words’ meaning by sense. For evaluating the learning process, the teacher used daily test evaluation in the end of post-reading activity and provided the students with questions about the reading material. From all the tests, 73,65% of the students could pass the test.

It is suggested for English teachers to provide students with dictionary skill to assist students learn. It is recommended for the next researcher to conduct a qualitative research on how bilingual dictionaries work for other language skills in teaching and learning process.
